Maetang Province, Northern Thailand - June 30, 2006 - At the turn of the 20th century, an estimated 100,000 elephants roamed Thailand. Today, there are fewer than 5,000, mainly because of habitat destruction and poachers.
Wildlife organizations across the globe work on behalf of the wild elephants that remain but the domesticated ones get less attention. For about a thousand years, these massive mammals have played many roles in war and transportation, in logging and tourism. But today few people in Thailand are dedicated to their welfare.
Christina Russo traveled to Thailand where she met one woman who is: Sangduen Chailert. Click the listen link above to hear her report.
