Growing The Greenway, Part 1
Listen to story (Real Audio)

BOSTON, Mass. - October 11, 2007 - Later this month another major park in the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway is scheduled to open.

The unveiling of the North End park will follow the recent ribbon cutting on the Chinatown park, and at the end of the year, officials plan officially to open the Wharf District park.

When that happens, the city of Boston will be reconnected with parks, instead of being divided north to south by the now torn-down elevated highway.

The birth of the mile-long urban park system is an idea 30 years in the making. In fact, it was a big selling point for tearing down the highway and putting it underground in the Big Dig.

Today, in the first of a two-part series on the Greenway, we deliver an update on how the project is proceeding. WBUR's Bob Oakes speaks with Peter Meade, who chairs the Greenway Conservancy.

Tomorrow, we'll look at the controversy surrounding one Greenway park.
