New Rep Artistic Director Steps Down
By Andrea Shea

Listen to story (Real Audio)

WATERTOWN, Mass. - August 22, 2008 - The New Repertory Theatre in Watertown is losing its long-time artistic director.

WBUR's Andrea Shea reports.

SHEA: Rick Lombardo is stepping down after 12 years with the New Rep, which is known for staging edgy plays.

As a businessman Lombardo quadrupled the theater's budget and oversaw a move to a state-of-the-art performance space.

Lombardo also witnessed a doubling of attendance between 2002 and 2007.

LOMBARDO: Leaving now at this moment, this is the hard thing to do because I feel like the growth at New Rep and the work that we've done here for 12 years has been part of the story of the growth of the Boston theater scene.

SHEA: Lombardo wants to move on now. He's been hired as the new Artistic Director at San Jose's new Rep in California. The search for his successor in Boston has begun.
