Mother And Brother Of Falmouth Man Accused Of Shooting Officers Expected In Court
The mother and brother of a Falmouth man who police say shot two officers are due in court Monday.
Marcus Maseda, 17, and Kimberly Koval, 38, are charged with interfering with the police's investigation by trying to block officers from pursuing Malik Koval, 21, as he ran into a house. Maseda and Kimberly Koval are expected to be arraigned in Falmouth District Court on charges of obstruction of justice, assault and battery on a police officer and interfering with the duties of a police officer.
Police say Malik Koval was breaking bottles in the street around 5:30 p.m. Friday when police arrived. Koval ran into his family's house, and then started shooting. Officer Don DeMiranda was shot in the chest, but the shot was stopped by his bulletproof vest. A second shot hit him near the shoulder. Officer Ryan Moore was grazed in the neck by a bullet. Both are recovering.
Koval, who was struck by officers' returning gunfire, remains hospitalized at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and is charged with the shooting. No arraignment date has been set.
Meanwhile, Falmouth police say they're grateful for the outpouring of support after the shooting.
"We have received numerous well wishes, the expressions of love and support, gifts food, coffee and the countless thoughts and prayers," Falmouth Police Chief Edward Dunne said. "We are thankful we are able to serve such a supportive community."
Over the weekend, Stephanie Murphy, of Bourne, and her daughter dropped off baked goods at the Falmouth police headquarters.
"We wanted to show our support," she said. "It's the least we could do. It doesn't really quite touch what [the police] do. They do a lot."
Dunne says the department is taking steps to support members and their families affected by Friday's shooting.
