T transit police investigating after video shows duo jump off Red Line train into Neponset River

MBTA transit police are pursuing the identities of two people seen in a video apparently jumping off a moving Red Line train into the Neponset River.

The video posted on X, formerly Twitter, by Boston 25 News after it began making rounds on social media, shows two people leap from atop the roof of the train into the waters. A transit police spokesman said the department believes the video is "several months old."

"First and foremost, the stunt depicted within the video is incredibly dangerous and could easily lead to a fatality," Superintendent Richard Sullivan, spokesman for the transit police, said in a statement.

He added that the "actions depicted within are illegal," and the department is investigating and would seek criminal complaints against the pair once they are identified.

The Red Line train was moving inbound between North Quincy Station and JFK Station. For roughly 14 months until November 2023, trains that crossed the Neponset River bridge were restricted to speeds between 10-25 miles per hour. The slow zone was numerous speed restrictions the T set up to allow for necessary track work or ensure the safety of riders and T workers on tracks in need of repair.
