Mass. Has Its First Death Linked To Coronavirus, Health Officials Say

An 87-year-old Winthrop man has died from complications related to COVID-19, state health officials said Friday, marking the state's first death in the growing global pandemic.

In a press conference Friday, Winthrop officials said the man was exposed by community contact — meaning it's unclear how the person got the virus.

Massachusetts has 328 reported cases of coronavirus, as of Thursday. There have been more than 3,132 tests completed at state and commercial labs.

Five people in New England have died of coronavirus. Connecticut has now announced three deaths there, and Vermont announced two last night. Officials in those states say all the patients were elderly.

Correction: Due to a reporting error, an earlier version of this story misstated the victim's age.
