Some Black and Hispanic teachers in Massachusetts are grappling with burnout due to what many call an "invisible tax." While students of color make up 40% of the state's school system, their teachers are overwhelmingly white: 86%, according to the Wheelock Educational Policy Center at Boston University.

The gap can put a tax on the few teachers of color to help students, among other things, reckon with systemic racism — a need that felt more acute in the last year and a half.

Consider This cohost Paris Alston speaks with GBH education reporter Meg Woolhouse about teacher burnout and what officials are doing to stem the problem.

This segment aired on November 1, 2021.
