Resume

Being a mother means feeling conflicted in some way about the balance between raising one's children and the rest of life.

For some women, this conflict causes tremendous guilt and doubt. Steve's mother, Dr. Barbara Almond, helped women understand these feelings in her professional role as a psychoanalyst at the same time that she grappled with these same feelings in her personal life.

In this episode, for Mother's Day, the Sugars remember Steve's mom, who recently passed, and take two letters from women in the midst of such conflicts—one from a career-driven young woman who cannot imagine returning to work after the birth of her son, the other from a daughter caught between the needs of her dying mother and her newborn baby girl.
