The faculty at Hampshire College in Massachusetts has announced a plan to "re-envision" the financially struggling school as it seeks a merger.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports the faculty proposal released Wednesday would create a council of students, staff, alumni and other stakeholders to help plan the college's future.

The plan suggests avoiding layoffs at the school in Amherst and bringing in a new class of students from recently closed schools.

Faculty also proposed creating new fields of study.

Hampshire previously said it was looking to partner with another institution and would not be accepting a full class of students this fall.

College President Miriam Nelson says officials will review the "financial footing" of each part of the proposal.
