Winthrop Vet Helps Local Soldiers

Rising death tolls, increasing sectarian violence. Amidst the rubble of war, good news can sometimes get buried. Take the story of one Winthrop man's efforts to send glad tidings to soldiers in Iraq, box-by-box.

Since the war began, Vietnam veteran Richard Honan has been sending 10-pound care packages to soldiers from Winthrop and surrounding communities. WBUR's Bob Oakes visits Honan at his Winthrop shop to see him what he calls his life's work.

To find out how you can help, contact Richard Honan via the link below. Also, you can click on the module below to see pictures of soldiers' hand-written letters to Honan from Iraq. WBUR's Sarah Bush produced this story.

This program aired on August 20, 2007. The audio for this program is not available.
