Alexandra Kerry's 'Notes from the Trail'

One question on which both the McCain and Obama campaigns apparently agree is the need for privacy for the candidates' children. Yet the candidates for president and vice president all define themselves, in part, by their relationships with their children.

One person who knows what it's like to be in the public spotlight is Alexandra Kerry, older daughter of Senator John Kerry, the Democratic nominee four years ago. She has assembled her campaign memories in the new book, "Notes From the Trail: Presidential Politics From the Inside Out."

We started our conversation by asking Kerry why she chose to spend the 2004 campaign with her father, even though she wasn't politically active at the time.

This program aired on September 22, 2008. The audio for this program is not available.
