Thousands Turn Out For Firefighter Funeral

Firefighters have turned out by the thousands for the funeral of a Boston firefighter killed when the ladder truck he was in went out of control and crashed into an apartment building.

The firefighters, wearing dress blues, stood six rows deep in bitter cold and saluted the flag-draped casket of Lt. Kevin Kelley as it passed by Wednesday.

Inside St. Ann Church in Quincy, the Rev. Daniel Mahoney spoke of the ultimate sacrifice firefighters are willing to make and called Kelley a hero.

Kelley was killed Friday when the ladder truck careened down a steep hill, then crashed through a wall and into a building.

The accident is under investigation.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Attorney General Martha Coakley and Gov. Deval Patrick were among those at the funeral.
