Boston To Lay Off 500 School Employees

A spokesman for the mayor says the city will be sending out pink slips to more than 500 school staff. Two hundred and twelve of them are teachers and teachers' assistants.

The layoffs are included in a new budget proposal being submitted to the school committee on Wednesday.

Mayor Tom Menino is pressuring the teachers' union to accept a wage freeze to avoid layoffs, but union officials say they want more details on the city's budget, including the city's plans to spend new federal stimulus money.
