Father: Man Who Shot Psych Patient Is Special Cop

The father of a man who fatally shot a psychiatric patient after the patient stabbed a doctor says his son is a Boston special police officer who works for a private company.

Paul F. Langone said his son, Paul M. Langone, shot 37-year-old Jay Carciero Tuesday after the stabbing during a therapy session at a bipolar clinic in an office leased by Massachusetts General Hospital.

Langone's father told reporters outside his Reading home Wednesday that his 33-year-old son is a well-trained Boston special officer who provided security for buildings. Special officers are licensed by the police department, but employed by private companies. They are authorized to carry firearms and make arrests.

Police would not confirm Langone's identity or if he is a special officer. They have said the man who shot Carciero was an off-duty security guard.
