Gov. Patrick Signs Driving-While-Texting Ban

Gov. Deval Patrick has signed a bill that bans texting while driving and requires older drivers to get vision tests every five years when they renew their licenses.

The governor signed the bill Friday afternoon in his office. It takes effect in October.

Those caught texting and driving face fines ranging from $100 for a first offense up to $500 for repeaters. Police will be able to pull over and fine anyone they see texting.

The new law also prohibits scanning the Internet on a phone or mobile device while driving. The fine will not be considered a moving violation.

The new law also bans anyone under 18 from talking on a cell phone while driving. Violators face suspension of their license or learner's permit.

Massachusetts becomes the 29th state to ban texting while driving.
