Boston Group Building Hospital In Haiti

A Boston-based organization that advocates and provides health care for the poor around the world has broken ground on a new 320-bed hospital in Haiti.

The $15 million Partners In Health facility being built in the town of Mirebalais will offer clinical facilities not available at any public site in the country, including an intensive care unit and six operating rooms equipped for thoracic surgery.

Partners In Health said in a statement the new hospital will have the capacity of the group's current 12 clinics in the country.

Plans for a smaller hospital were expanded at the request of the nation's Ministry of Health following the Jan. 12 earthquake.

Partners In Health co-founder Dr. Paul Farmer calls the project critical to rebuilding Haiti's infrastructure.
