Gloucester School May Be Put On 'Probation'

The state education commissioner says a controversial charter school in Gloucester should be put on "probation."

The state board of education will vote Friday on Commissioner Mitchell Chester's recommendations — including a dozen remedial steps the Gloucester Community Arts Charter School must take.

"I haven't had the chance to really look through all the recommendations, but I trust that they are ones that we were heading towards anyways, and it's all about good education," said Amy Ballin, who chairs the school's board of trustees.

In a letter to the state board of education yesterday, Chester listed several issues that he says have led him to question the viability of the Gloucester Community Arts school.
