Democrat Bump Narrowly Wins Race For Mass. Auditor

Democrat Suzanne Bump, a former state representative and state labor secretary, has won a narrow victory to succeed longtime auditor Joseph DeNucci on Beacon Hill.

Bump defeated Republican Mary Connaughton, a former member of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority board, in Tuesday's election. Green-Rainbow candidate Nathanael Fortune was also on the ballot.

Bump touted her managerial skills during the campaign, saying she'd focus on wringing the best possible performance out of state agencies.

Connaughton stressed her experience as a certified public accountant and her record of asking tough question on the turnpike board.

Bump will be the first woman to hold the auditor post in Massachusetts.

DeNucci is retiring after holding the job since 1987.
