A Somerville police officer is recovering after being shot as he tried to deliver an arrest warrant Tuesday evening.

The suspect, 21-year-old Matthew Krister, was killed.

Officer Mario Oliveria underwent surgery Tuesday night at Mass. General Hospital. Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone joined the family at the hospital.

"I know this officer, I've known him a long time. He's a good officer and a good person," Curtatone said. "He's highly decorated. We're just hoping and praying that he continues to progress well."

The Middlesex County district attorney's office is investigating.
