WBUR Wins National Murrow Award

The Radio and Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has announced that 90.9 WBUR, Boston’s NPR news station, has won the 2011 Edward R. Murrow Award for www.wbur.org, which was selected as the best large market radio website in the nation.

This is the second year in a row that WBUR has been honored with a national Murrow award, after the station’s win for "overall excellence" in 2010.

"I'm delighted to see WBUR recognized for its extraordinary online journalism," said WBUR General Manager Charlie Kravetz. "This honor recognizes that wbur.org is more than a radio station website — it's a rich and robust online news destination. Thanks to our visionary Executive Editor of New Media John Davidow, and a hard-working Web team, the entire station has evolved into digital news content producers. This award acknowledges that the effort is connecting with users."

Redesigned in 2009, wbur.org combines original news stories with existing radio content that is customized for online users. Visitors to wbur.org can listen live to news and programs; view text or audio of individual stories from WBUR and NPR; engage with rich multimedia assets designed specifically for the Web; read timely "online only" news articles; access websites for local and national WBUR programs; and explore blogs like CommonHealth, Hubbub, Public Radio Kitchen and OpenCourt.us. Each month, wbur.org averages more than 500,000 visitors and 2 million page views.

"We crafted wbur.org to be a valuable resource for the Boston community," Davidow said, "so it's a thrill to be recognized as the best large market radio website in the country. We're constantly striving to find ways to provide the quality journalism and public media sensibility that our radio listeners expect, while simultaneously using technology to offer online users rich, new digital assets. This Murrow award indicates that it's a solid strategy we’ll continue to build upon."

According to the RTNDA, "The Edward R. Murrow is one of the highest honors an electronic journalist can receive. The Murrow Award is bestowed on news professionals and organizations demonstrating outstanding skills and abilities." The honors will be presented at the RTDNA Awards Dinner in New York on Oct. 10, 2011.

90.9 WBUR-FM is Boston’s NPR news station and the home of nationally syndicated programs On Point with Tom Ashbrook, Here & Now with Robin Young, Car Talk and Only A Game, as well as a daily local program, Radio Boston. WBUR also has a 30-person newsroom dedicated to reporting local content during the national NPR programs, Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

This program aired on June 22, 2011. The audio for this program is not available.
