The United States Attorney’s Office and the FBI Bulger Fugitive Task Force on Thursday morning held their first news conference in Boston on the California arrest of James "Whitey" Bulger and Catherine Greig.

Federal authorities said it is a great day for law enforcement, ending the "long and exhausting hunt" for Bulger.

U.S Attorney Carmen Ortiz said it was the public service announcement that aired nationally earlier this week that led to the information which resulted in Bulger’s arrest. The FBI office in Los Angeles received this tip on Tuesday and at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday FBI agents began surveillance of Bulger’s Santa Monica apartment building, where Bulger and Grieg were living under the alias of Charles and Carol Gasko.

At 5:45 p.m. agents used a ruse to draw Bulger out of the apartment where he was arrested without incident. Soon after, agents went into the apartment and arrested Greig. The FBI would not detail the ruse.

Bulger and Greig are expected to be returned to Boston within the next 48 hours.

Bulger faces federal charges of extortion, money laundering and murder. He faces life in prison on the federal charges and could face the death penalty if convicted of state murder charges in Oklahoma and Florida.

This program aired on June 23, 2011.
