- A reporter's notebook -
I transferred from Brandeis University to New York University in September 2001 when I was 18. I didn’t know the city or anyone in it. I was assigned to live in a condo-style dorm at 80 Lafayette St., a few blocks south of Canal Street in Chinatown.
The bright side, it seemed, to living a mile and a half from campus, next to a homeless shelter and across the street from a jail, was the view. By climbing out my bedroom window on the 12th floor, I had access to an illegal balcony with a great view of the World Trade Center, just 10 blocks away.
