The Kennedy family is mourning the loss of one of its own. Kara Kennedy, the oldest child of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, died of an apparent heart attack after working out at a health club in Washington, D.C., late Friday. She was 51 years old.

Throughout her life, Kara tended to shy away from the spotlight, choosing instead to pursue a career behind the camera. She worked as a television producer and later as a filmmaker.

Peter Meade, a longtime friend of the Kennedy family and currently the head of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, joined Morning Edition Monday to reflect on the life and work of Kara Kennedy.

This program aired on September 19, 2011.
