Families In Bulger Case Lose Appeal

A federal appeals court has denied the families of two men allegedly killed by former Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger who were trying to recover an $8.5 million legal award from the federal government.

The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Thursday that the families of Michael Donahue and Edward "Brian" Halloran did not file their claims on time.

Bulger and another member of his gang are alleged to have carried out a hit on Halloran on the Boston waterfront in 1982. Donahue was an unintended victim who had simply offered Halloran a ride home.

Bulger was an FBI informant at the time, and a judge in 2009 ordered the government to pay damages to the families after determining that the FBI was responsible for the deaths.
