Meet Lucas Papademos, Greece's New Interim Prime Minister

Lucas Papademos has been selected as the interim prime minister of Greece.

The former vice president of the European Central Bank, Papademos has a strong background in academics and finance and is currently a visiting professor of public policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.

His ties to Boston and the state of Massachusetts don't stop there.

Papademos earned a degree in physics, a masters in electrical engineering, and a doctorate in economics while studying at Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the 1970s. He also served as a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston in 1980.

The 64-year-old academic and economist has published numerous articles in the field of macroeconomic theory and the financial stability and economic policy of the European Union.

He is known in Greece for his work as one of the country's most senior economists. He joined the Bank of Greece as chief economist in 1985, rising to deputy governor in 1993. He left the Bank of Greece in 2002 to take be the vice president of the European Central Bank. He left that position in 2010 to serve as an adviser to Papandreou.

Papademos will serve as the head of the Greek government until a February 2012 general election. The new administration's main job will be passing the new bailout package agreed by international creditors.
