Bulger Lawyers To Update Boston Judge On Evidence

Lawyers for former Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger are expected to update a federal judge on evidence turned over by prosecutors in an indictment charging him for his alleged role in 19 murders.

Bulger, the former head of the Winter Hill Gang, was captured in June in Santa Monica, Calif., more than 16 years after he fled Boston to evade prosecution.

The 82-year-old Bulger is awaiting trial in federal court in Boston.

Prosecutors have said they plan to turn over voluminous discovery material to Bulger's attorneys, including thousands of hours of audiotapes and videotapes, hundreds of photos and other evidence.

Bulger's lawyers and prosecutors are expected to give a status report Wednesday in U.S. District Court. It is unclear whether Bulger will attend.

This program aired on January 11, 2012. The audio for this program is not available.
