Newton Library Employee Arrested On Child Porn Charges

This article is more than 11 years old.

A longtime employee of the Newton Public Library has been arrested on child pornography charges.

State Police arrested 47-year-old Peter Buchanan as part of an investigation of Internet file-sharing programs that were used to distribute child pornography.

At Buchanan's arraignment in Newton District Court Wednesday, his lawyer admitted he was in possession of child porn but said he didn't intend to distribute it and is "overcharged."

Bail was set at $5,000. He was ordered to stay away from children under 18, to stay away from Newton libraries, and not to use computers.

The news comes just a week after David Ettlinger, a teacher at Newton's Underwood Elementary School, was arrested on similar charges.

The Middlesex County District Attorney's office says the two cases do not appear to be related.

Buchanan is due back in court Feb. 13.
