Until Thomas Menino came along, the longest-serving mayor in Boston history was Kevin Hagan White, who died Friday at age 82. There will be a public wake Tuesday, followed by a funeral on Wednesday for White.

As White strode across Boston's political stage, serving from 1968 until 1984, perhaps the most prominent journalist covering him was longtime Boston Globe Metro columnist Mike Barnicle.

Barnicle joined Morning Edition from South Beach in Miami, where he is appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
