MBTA Ridership Is Up For The 16th Straight Month

This article is more than 10 years old.

Ridership on the MBTA has continued its longest monthly growth streak in the transit agency's history.

As the Associated Press reports:

The MBTA announced on Thursday that the average number of weekday passenger trips increased by about 40,000, or 2.9 percent over the same month a year ago.

That's the T's 16th straight month of growth in year-over-year ridership.

However, as State House News Service adds:

May’s ridership was slightly lower than April’s, which hit a record-breaking total of 1.37 million.

And the transit agency's ridership streak is set to hit a hurdle: An average 23 percent fare hike, implemented to close a budget deficit, takes effect Sunday.
