Longtime Dem Rep. Ed Markey Re-Elected In Mass.

Longtime Democratic U.S. Rep. Ed Markey has easily won re-election in a new district that includes Boston's northern and western suburbs.

In Tuesday's election he beat Republican Tom Tierney, an actuary from Framingham.

Markey is a Malden resident who has been in Congress since 1976. He's the dean of the Massachusetts congressional delegation and the ranking Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee. He's also a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Markey has been active in energy and defense issues, chiding Republicans during floor debate this year about what he called giveaways to big oil.

Tierney won a three-way Republican primary in September for the chance to challenge Markey.
