No Thanksgiving Shopping In Mass.

Massachusetts retailers are not joining their counterparts in other states in opening on the Thanksgiving holiday.

State law prohibits businesses from selling on the holiday itself — but many plan to open just after midnight for Black Friday shopping.

Bill Rennie, of the Massachusetts Retailers Association, says his organization has taken no position on getting rid of the so-called "blue laws," but he hopes lawmakers review the issue.

"It's preventing people from shopping in Massachusetts stores, but it's not preventing them from shopping," Rennie said. "If they want to they can go over the border to one of our neighboring states, or you can always shop online."

Some workers and store owners in the Bay State say they like having the Thanksgiving holiday off. In other states, workers planned walkouts and demonstrations against the extended hours.
