System Malfunctions 'Ruled Out' In T Crash; Surveillance Footage Released

As they probe an MBTA accident that sent 37 people to the hospital Thursday, state transportation officials are now focused on the operator of a Green Line trolley that rear-ended another at the Boylston Street station.

Transportation Secretary Richard Davey said at a news conference Friday that investigators have ruled out system malfunctions.

"With this point in the investigation, we have ruled out both any mechanical issues for either of the trains or infrastructure, meaning track, signal, etc.," Davey said. "And so at this point we're now focused on the operator."

The operator, a 46-year-old man who has not been identified, remained hospitalized Friday. His injuries are not considered serious.

"If it's proven that he was inattentive as it related to driving that vehicle, then it's unlikely that he would be driving any vehicle for the MBTA in the future," added MBTA Acting GM Jonathan Davis.

The MBTA on Friday also released Boylston station surveillance footage of the crash.

In the video, the one visible trolley is seen lurching forward and one passenger is forcibly ejected through the doors to the platform.
