In Washington, Warren, Kennedy Are Sworn In

Elizabeth Warren has been sworn in as the state's newest U.S. senator, the first woman from Massachusetts to hold the office.

The Democratic lawmaker took the oath of office during a ceremony Thursday in the Senate chambers in Washington, D.C. Vice President Joe Biden administered the oath.

Warren replaces the outgoing Scott Brown.

Joseph Kennedy III was also sworn in Thursday as the state's newest congressman.

The Brookline Democrat fills the 4th Congressional District seat formerly held by Barney Frank.

Kennedy is the first member of the famous political clan to take a seat in Congress since the death of his uncle, Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, in 2009 and the retirement of Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy, Edward Kennedy's son, in 2011.

The state's eight other House members, all Democratic incumbents, were also sworn in.

The state's other senator, John Kerry, may be leaving soon as the Senate is expected to confirm his nomination as secretary of state.
