Mass. Gets HUD Funding To Help Disabled Tenants

Massachusetts is receiving $5.3 million from the federal government to help disabled, low-income people avoid becoming homeless or confined to institutions.

State officials say the funds from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development will provide supportive housing units and rental assistance to 100 people who are transitioning out of institutional care or are at extreme risk of becoming homeless.

Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray says the federal funding will help the state meet its eventual goal of creating 1,000 units of permanent supportive housing by 2015.

U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano says it will allow low-income people with disabilities live independently in their communities.
