Newton Schools Open Amid Teacher's Porn Charges

Tuesday is first day of school for students in Newton Public Schools.

The start of the academic year comes as one teacher is facing child pornography charges, following the sentencing earlier this year of a different teacher to 45 years in prison for his involvement in an international child pornography ring.

Police, counselors and school officials are all making themselves available Tuesday night to answer parents' questions about the arrest of 57-year-old Stephen Chan.

Chan was a math teacher at F.A. Day Middle School. He also coached the boys gymnastics team at Newton North High School.

Newton Mayor Setti Warren said he's taking allegations that the teacher had thousands of pornographic images on his computer seriously.

"The allegations that have been made against Stephen Chan are troubling," Warren said.

The superintendent of schools said the case could lead to a review teacher screening practices.

This program aired on September 3, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
