Suspect In Rakes’ Death To Stay In Custody

A Massachusetts man charged with poisoning another man's iced coffee over a business debt will remain in custody.

Sixty-nine-year-old William Camuti, of Sudbury, appeared Tuesday in Concord District Court. He's been held without bail since pleading not guilty in August to attempted murder in Stephen Rakes' death.

Rakes met with Camuti in July right after finding out he wouldn't be testifying against Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger.

Prosecutors allege Camuti owed Rakes money and acted alone when he put potassium cyanide in Raikes' coffee, then drove him around until he died and dumped his body in the woods.

At Tuesday's hearing, the prosecution said state police investigating the killing found Camuti had slit his wrists, and he later admitted the poisoning to police. Camuti's attorney said he was under emotional stress at the time and isn't dangerous.
