Emerson College Responds To Sex Assault Complaints

Emerson College in Boston is overhauling the way it deals with reports of sexual assaults after a group of students filed a complaint with the federal government alleging the school brushed off at least two recent assaults.

President M. Lee Pelton said in a campus-wide email Wednesday that the college will hire a "sexual assault advocate" who will support victims and oversee response and prevention programs.

Students filed a complaint last week with the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.

One of those students, a 19-year-old sophomore, says she was sexually assaulted by another student she knew well. She says the school encouraged her to not talk to police, and her case was mishandled by the school's judicial process. She says her case was closed without punishing the other student.
