Three Boston police supervisors have been reprimanded over an incomplete investigation of a 2012 assault linked to a man later charged with murder.

The suspect, Edwin Alemany, has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and killing Amy Lord of South Boston in July. Police said Alemany forced her to withdraw money from several ATMs before killing her and dumping her body in a park.

The department began an internal investigation after discovering that Alemany's ID had been found at the scene of a nonfatal 2012 attack on another woman.

Police officials publicly demoted a detective they said failed to pursue the 2012 investigation. He has appealed the decision.

Officials said Friday they reprimanded a lieutenant and two sergeants who oversaw his work and have put new case management procedures in place.
