Stolen FBI Rifles Recovered; 16-Year-Old In Custody

Police say a 16-year-old boy is in custody in connection with the theft of two rifles stolen from an unmarked FBI vehicle parked outside an agent's Andover home.

An FBI spokesman says the rifles were turned in at the Lawrence police station Friday morning.

Interim Lawrence Chief James Fitzpatrick says a relative of the boy's brought the guns in at about 2:30 a.m.

Police identified the boy through fingerprints.

The FBI had offered a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the recovery of the Colt M16-A1 rifle and HS Precision Pro-Series 2000 sniper rifle.

Items were stolen from other vehicles in the same neighborhood during the same time period Wednesday evening to Thursday morning.

The FBI spokesman says per agency protocol, an internal investigation will be conducted.
