Walsh Begins Search For New Boston Schools Chief

Education will be a focus of Boston Mayor Martin Walsh's first full day in office.

Walsh plans to meet with the school committee on Tuesday to formally launch a nationwide search for a new school superintendent. John McDonough has been serving as the acting schools chief since Carol Johnson retired last summer.

In his inaugural address on Monday, Walsh said he would look for a "proven urban education leader" who shared his goals of eliminating the achievement gap, expanding early education and reforming the city's high schools.

The mayor also said he would order a performance audit of the school department to make sure money is being spent efficiently.

Walsh was sworn in to succeed Thomas Menino, who retired after more than two decades in office.
