New Mayor Martin Walsh appointed Evans last week to head what Evans calls "the greatest department in the nation."

Evans is to be formally sworn in Friday afternoon. He had held the job on an interim basis since Edward Davis resigned late last year.

Evans has said his primary goal is reducing violent crime.

Evans had major roles in the handling of the Occupy Boston protest and the city's response to the marathon bombing during the administration of longtime Mayor Thomas Menino, who did not seek re-election after 20 years in office.
