Bulger Hangout Remade — And Moved — For Depp Movie

A piece of notorious South Boston history has been transplanted to Cambridge — just until some film shooting wraps.

Convicted mobster James "Whitey" Bulger had an office in Southie's Triple O's Lounge, on West Broadway. And now, with filming reportedly about to get underway for "Black Mass" — a biopic in which Johnny Depp plays Bulger — a "Triple O's" has popped up in Cambridge.

The original Triple O's (which no longer exists) is seen in an evidence photo above, at left; the current movie set version is at right.

The movie version, on Cambridge Street, is under construction through Friday, according to WBUR's Nate Goldman.

Here's how we described the original Triple O's in our project on the Bulger trial:

Owned by mobster Kevin O'Neil, the notorious hangout on the first floor led upstairs to the dark office of Whitey Bulger, where he collected and extorted payments. Here Bulger met Kevin Weeks, an ex-boxer working as a bouncer. Impressed by his crushing blows and the way he handled himself, Bulger made Weeks into his right-hand man. The bar is now Owl Station Bar & Bistro.

Also Wednesday, the first reported photos of Depp as Bulger appeared.
