Assembly Square MBTA Station Opening Sept. 2
The MBTA's first new rapid-transit station in 27 years is set to open Tuesday at Somerville's Assembly Square.
Orange Line trains will begin stopping at the new Assembly station, between Wellington Circle and Sullivan Square, with the start of service Tuesday morning, according to a T spokesperson.
A 10-minute ride from downtown Boston, the station is the capstone of Somerville’s massive $1.5 billion Assembly Row development. Though not completed, it's already home to dozens of retail outlets and restaurants, two new apartment complexes, a Legoland Discovery Center and a 12-screen movie theater.
"This new Orange Line station will provide a vital, accessible and convenient rapid transit link for the City of Somerville, especially the new Assembly Row neighborhood," Transportation Secretary Richard Davey said in a statement.
While the station will open to passengers Tuesday, construction is expected to continue through November.
It's the first Orange Line station for Somerville, and one of six new T stops slated to open there in the next decade.
