The state commissioner of transitional assistance is planning her personal menus pretty carefully this week. As a demonstration of how far — or not — federal food support benefits go under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commissioner Stacey Monahan is living on food purchased with a total of $31.50 a week, the average weekly, per-person SNAP benefit.

Monahan joined WBUR's Morning Edition.

This segment aired on September 23, 2014.
