The complete shut down of Massachusetts' only nuclear power plant could take decades.

The owner says the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth is no longer financially viable and will be closed by the middle of 2019 — but that's just the beginning of the decommissioning process.

To offer perspective on exactly what it means to decommission a nuclear power plant, David Lochbaum, director of the Nuclear Safety Program for the Union of Concerned Scientists, joined Morning Edtion.
