Teen Suspects In New Bedford Veteran's Death Are Held Without Bail

Two teenagers charged in the killing of a New Bedford cab driver who had served in Vietnam and was once the city's veterans' agent have been ordered held without bail.

Eighteen-year-old Alexander Mills was sent to a state psychiatric facility for a competency evaluation at his arraignment Tuesday on murder and other charges in the Saturday night death of 66-year-old Donald DePina.

A 16-year-old boy who is not being named was arraigned in juvenile court on charges related to DePina's death.

Prosecutors said at Mills' arraignment that the teens got into DePina's cab, had him drive to a remote location, then Mills shot him in the head before taking his belongings.

Mills allegedly bragged about the shooting and tried to use DePina's credit card.

Mills' attorney said his client has "'significant mental health issues."
