The Boston Globe To Move Downtown In January 2017

The Boston Globe says it's planning to return to its downtown roots.

The newspaper said Thursday it will move its headquarters from Boston's Dorchester neighborhood, on the outskirts of the city, to a downtown State Street location in January 2017.

Boston Globe Media Partners chief executive Mike Sheehan said editorial and business operations will move to Exchange Place.

The Globe is moving its printing operations to a new facility in Taunton, south of Boston.

The newspaper was founded in 1872 on Washington Street and published from that downtown location for more than 70 years. It moved to its current Dorchester complex in 1958.

Sheehan says the 2017 relocation will put Globe journalists within walking distance of City Hall, the State House "and virtually every corporate headquarters in the city."
