Fall River District Fire Chief Charged With Drunk Driving After Police Chase

Police have arrested Fall River District Fire Chief Ambrose Smith, who they say led troopers on a chase while driving under the influence.

Massachusetts State Police say they received a call about someone driving a pickup truck on its rims early Friday morning in Dartmouth.

Troopers attempted to stop the truck, but the driver sped off and hit speeds of up to 65 mph before coming to a stop near Dartmouth Mall.

The driver, identified as 54-year-old Smith, has been charged with operating under the influence, failure to stop and reckless operation among other offenses.

Fall River Fire Department Chief John Lynch says the allegations against Smith are "totally out of character for him."

Lynch says Smith has taken a personal leave from work.
