Berkshire DA Hires Special Prosecutor To Handle 'Backlog' Of 7 Homicide Cases

A Massachusetts district attorney's office has hired a special prosecutor to help handle what it calls a "backlog" of seven homicide cases.

Dennis Yusko, a spokesman for Berkshire District Attorney Andrea Harrington, tells The Berkshire Eagle that Brett Vottero was hired several weeks ago.

Yusko says Harrington believes that hiring special prosecutors "can be a cost-effective tool to deal with the ebb and flow of complex cases in the office."

He says hiring a special prosecutor avoids the long-term salary and benefit costs associated with full-time prosecutors.

Vottero will be responsible for prosecuting two unrelated homicide cases that date to 2017. The remaining homicide cases will be handled by staff attorneys.

Vottero previously served in a similar capacity for the Northwestern district attorney.
