Man Charged With Rape After Posing As Uber Driver Outside Boston Club

A man posed as a driver for a ride-hailing company, kidnapped a woman looking for a ride home after leaving a Boston nightclub, then drove her to Rhode Island and raped her, prosecutors say.

Alvin Campbell Jr. was held on $250,000 cash bail after pleading not guilty Thursday to kidnapping and rape charges.

Campbell, the brother of Boston City Councilor Andrea Campbell, is a suspect in two other sexual assaults, prosecutors said.

The woman attended a holiday party at a bar near North Station on Dec. 7, prosecutors said. She summoned an Uber ride home, but the driver canceled. A man prosecutors allege was Campbell called to her by name and persuaded her to get in his SUV, prosecutors said.

He drove the woman to Cumberland, Rhode Island, and raped her, authorities said.

Defense attorney Lauren Thomas argued for $20,000 cash bail. She said she has not had enough time to review the evidence in the case.

The suspect's sister praised the victim's courage for coming forward.

"I am extremely heartbroken and saddened and devastated by these allegations," Councilor Campbell said in a statement.
